Questions

• What qualifications do employers typically require for logistics and supply chain manager positions?

Most employers require a bachelor's degree in logistics, supply chain management, or business, along with 3–5 years of operational or supervisory experience. Some roles accept relevant certifications like APICS CSCP or ASCM credentials in place of a degree, particularly for internal promotions.

• What does a typical day involve in these roles?

Days involve monitoring shipment statuses, responding to delays or inventory issues, conducting supplier meetings, analyzing cost data, and coordinating with warehouse and transportation teams. Problem-solving and communication dominate the schedule, with time spent both at desks reviewing reports and on the floor troubleshooting operations.

• What technical skills are essential for logistics and supply chain managers?

Proficiency with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, data analysis tools, and supply chain management software is standard. Many roles require experience with forecasting, inventory management systems, and basic proficiency in Excel or similar platforms for reporting and optimization.

• How do logistics and supply chain managers progress in their careers?

Advancement typically moves toward senior management, director, or VP-level positions overseeing larger geographic regions or more complex operations. Some move into specialized areas like procurement, demand planning, or global supply chain strategy, while others transition to consulting.

• Are these positions generally office-based or do they involve fieldwork?

Roles balance office and operational floor time. Managers spend significant hours at desks managing data and meetings, but also visit warehouses, distribution centers, and work with frontline staff to understand operations and solve problems directly.

• What is the difference between logistics managers and supply chain managers?

Logistics managers focus narrowly on transportation, warehousing, and distribution of goods, while supply chain managers take a broader view encompassing procurement, production planning, and vendor relationships alongside logistics. Supply chain roles typically have wider organizational scope and responsibility.

• How much travel is typical in logistics and supply chain management roles?

Travel frequency varies widely depending on employer size and structure. Regional managers may travel weekly to multiple facilities, while those managing centralized operations may travel monthly or quarterly for audits and meetings.

• What separates this work from operations management or production management?

Operations managers oversee manufacturing or service delivery processes, while logistics and supply chain managers focus specifically on moving goods and coordinating external vendor networks. The work is more transactional and externally focused, dealing with suppliers, carriers, and distribution channels.

• Do logistics and supply chain managers work in shift patterns or standard hours?

Most positions follow standard business hours, though some facilities operate 24/7 and require managers on rotating shifts or on-call schedules. During peak seasons or disruptions, extended hours and weekend work become common.

• What problem-solving challenges are most common in these roles?

Managers regularly handle urgent delivery delays, sudden demand spikes, supplier failures, cost overruns, and inventory discrepancies. These demands require rapid decision-making under pressure with incomplete information, balancing service levels against operational costs.
