Why this role?

We're building a new Data & AI capability at Tesco IMS, and this role will be at the heart of that journey. As Data Engineering Manager (known internally as a Principal Engineer), you'll lead the team responsible for creating the trusted data foundations that underpin reporting, analytics and AI across the business. You'll help solve some of our biggest data challenges by introducing modern engineering practices, improving platform reliability, and ensuring data can be accessed and used with confidence. From shaping our Microsoft Fabric estate and data integration strategy to establishing engineering standards and DataOps practices, you'll have the opportunity to influence how data is delivered at scale. If you're passionate about building high-performing teams, modern data platforms and creating foundations that unlock business value, this is a chance to make a lasting impact.

What you’ll be doing

• Deliver trusted, scalable and secure data platforms that enable reporting, analytics, AI and business decision-making across Tesco IMS.

• Establish and embed modern Data Engineering and DataOps practices, improving the quality, reliability and operational readiness of data products and services.

• Build, develop and lead a high-performing Data Engineering capability, creating a culture of engineering excellence, continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.

• Enable faster and more consistent delivery of data products by defining reusable patterns, standards and governance controls for data integration, transformation and storage.

• Drive the evolution of the enterprise data platform, ensuring it remains resilient, cost-effective and capable of supporting future reporting, analytics and AI requirements.

• Partner with Product Managers, MI/BI & Analytics, AI & Data Science teams and business stakeholders to translate business needs into reliable data solutions that deliver measurable outcomes.

What we’re looking for (minimum criteria)

• Proven experience leading and developing high-performing Data Engineering teams, with accountability for capability growth, delivery quality and operational excellence.

• Strong expertise in designing, building and operating Microsoft Fabric solutions, including data ingestion, transformation, data warehousing, orchestration and lakehouse architectures.

• Deep understanding of DataOps, platform governance, security and data engineering best practices, with experience establishing scalable and reliable delivery frameworks.

• Ability to engage and influence business and technology stakeholders, translating strategic priorities into trusted data products and platform capabilities that deliver measurable value.

And if you have any of these, even better

• Experience leading the adoption and scaling of Microsoft Fabric within an enterprise environment.

• Experience with Fabric Real-Time Intelligence and AI-enabled capabilities such as Fabric IQ.

• Experience supporting reporting, analytics, AI and machine learning workloads on a modern data platform.

• Microsoft Fabric capacity management and security setup.

We welcome applications from everyone. If you’re excited about this role but your experience doesn’t align perfectly with every requirement, we’d still love to hear from you.

What’s in it for you

• A generous pension, with up to 7.5% employer contribution, depending on what you put in.

• Private Medical Insurance (WL2+) and virtual GP Service for you and your family.

• Performance related annual bonus.

• 7.2 weeks holiday, with the opportunity to buy more.

• Colleague Clubcard discount (10-15% + second card to share with someone else).

• Enhanced parental leave.

• Opportunities to Save and Buy as you earn.

• A place to get on - take advantage of our ongoing learning opportunities to help you achieve the job and career you want.
