Medical Laboratory Technician, Pathology

St. George’s University invites applicants for a full-time Medical Laboratory Technician role in the department of Pathology in the School of Medicine

Job Description

Objective

To contribute to the efficient functioning of the University Health Services (UHS) and enhance the knowledge, growth, and overall development of the medical students through courses administered by the Department.

Essential Functions

Laboratory Activities:

• Responsible for analyzing blood samples and reporting findings.
• Perform technical laboratory functions including Chemistry, Hematology, Serology, Coagulation studies and Immunology.
• Collecting, receiving, labeling, and/or analyzing blood samples using the correct testing equipment, when necessary.
• Report test results following clinic protocols alerting providers and/or nurses about abnormal results.
• Recording all test results accurately in the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
• Ensure quality control in collecting specimens.
• Ensure appropriate sampling and maintain accurate record keeping.
• Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies. Set up, maintain, calibrate, clean, and test sterility of medical laboratory equipment.
• Comply with all laboratory policies related to safety, cleanliness and infection control.
• Organizing and storing all chemical substances according to safety instructions.
• Serve as a back-up to the Lab In-charge as needed.
• Generating distilled water for laboratory use and bagging up the biohazard waste for disposal.
• Perform all other duties as assigned by the Senior Medical Lab Technologist and Director Medical Path Diagnostic

Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of medical laboratory principles, standards, applications and tests.
• Knowledge of medical laboratory safety, cleanliness and infection control policies and regulations.
• Knowledge of medical laboratory equipment uses and maintenance.
• Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Proficient in Microsoft word, Excel and Power Point
• The ability to maintain patient, team member and employer confidentiality.
• Ability to pay attention to the minute details of a project or task.
• Ability to adapt easily to changing conditions and work responsibilities.
• Display of a positive attitude.
• Ability to work as part of a team and collaborate with co-workers.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

• Office environment
• Medical diagnostic lab

Hours and Travel

• A typical work week is 40 hours Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm.
• Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during the core work hours between 8 am – 5 pm on campus for in person laboratory, diagnostics and research.
• Travel for medical/personal and professional meetings is granted by request and approval of the administration.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree required/Masters Degree in Natural or Biological Sciences preferred.
• Medical Laboratory Technician certification will be an asset.
• Medical laboratory experience required (at least 2 years)
• Electronic medical record experience will be an asset.
