The Pharmacy Automation platform positions BD to offer our pharmacy customers a more comprehensive set of smart, connected care technologies as they expand care to new settings, centralize their pharmacy operations and lead the charge in addressing some of the biggest challenges facing the industry, including health care worker burnout and the global clinician shortage. BD’s Pharmacy Automation portfolio covers a wide range of hardware and software technologies from storage and dispensing robots, vision solutions, pouch packagers, vial filling systems, blister card production systems, central fill solutions and enterprise pharmacy management software solutions.
This is a key functional leadership role within the BD MMS Pharmacy Automation Engineering organization, based in Limerick, Ireland (RCI). This role provides a unique opportunity to build and scale a high-impact engineering team with the ability to shape the future structure and capability of European hardware engineering within Pharmacy Automation.
The Senior Manager – Hardware Engineering will:
- Lead and scale the RCI hardware engineering team across mechanical, electrical, controls, and systems disciplines
- Serve as the functional authority for engineering excellence, talent development, and resource management at the site
- Enable execution of key programs by ensuring the right people, skills, and processes are in place
- Serve as the primary point of accountability for functional performance, capability, and output quality
- Partner with global peers across the Pharmacy Automation hardware engineering organization to ensure alignment of tools, processes, engineering practices, and strategic direction for the team
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Team Development & Organizational Scaling
- Directly manage and develop a multi-disciplinary engineering team (Mechanical, Electrical, Controls, Systems)
- Lead hiring and onboarding of additional engineers to support business growth
- Conduct performance management, development planning, and skills assessments
- Identify capability gaps and implement targeted training and development strategies
- Build the foundation for a scalable org structure
- Build a strong site identity and culture centered on accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
Execution Excellence & Engineering Governance
- Ensure consistent use of structured development processes, design reviews, and engineering rigor
- Drive adherence to quality systems, regulatory standards, and design control processes
- Lead functional excellence and governance forums to ensure technical consistency and risk management
- Promote best practices in architecture definition, risk management, and problem-solving
Resource Planning & Allocation - Partnership with Delivery & Cross-Functional Teams
- Work closely with Global Hardware Delivery Leads to ensure:
- Clear program scope, priorities, and execution alignment
- Effective integration of functional resources into program teams
- Maintain strong alignment with global hardware leadership on strategic direction and priorities
- Balance site capacity across competing priorities while maintaining high utilization and effectiveness
- Collaborate across R&D, Quality, Operations, Service, and Product Management to drive outcomes
Culture, Innovation & Continuous Improvement
- Foster a culture of ownership, transparency, and data-driven decision-making
- Encourage innovation in hardware design, system performance, and serviceability / manufacturability
- Promote continuous improvement in both technical capability and execution efficiency
People Leadership Responsibilities
- Directly manage performance, development, and engagement of the RCI hardware engineering team
- Conduct performance reviews and support career progression planning
- Lead hiring and talent acquisition efforts aligned to growth plans
- Build a high-performing, collaborative team environment
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, or related field)
- 10+ years of experience in hardware engineering, with significant leadership responsibilities
- Proven experience leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams in complex product development environments
- Strong understanding of medical device development, quality systems, and regulatory requirements
- Experience working in a global, matrixed organization

- Cross-functional collaboration and influence
- Decision-making in complex, ambiguous environments
