Mō te tūranga | About the role

As a Biodiversity Ranger, you'll help protect species and restore the unique ecosystems of Kaikōura and the wider South Marlborough area. A key focus of the role is leading the field delivery of the terrestrial biodiversity work programme including threatened plant, bird and invertebrate conservation, pest and weed control, ecological monitoring, and ecosystem restoration.

Working as part of a small, supportive field team, you'll enjoy plenty of variety and opportunities to contribute across the wider biodiversity programme. This is a predominantly field-based role, with occasional overnight trips to remote locations, collaborating with iwi, landowners, community groups, and conservation partners to achieve lasting conservation outcomes. In this role you will:

• Monitor and manage threatened species and ecosystems.
• Deliver pest plant and pest animal control operations.
• Conduct biodiversity monitoring and ecological surveys.
• Support habitat restoration and ecosystem enhancement projects.
• Work with iwi, community groups, landowners, and conservation partners.
• Contribute to planning, data analysis and reporting.

We're looking for someone who enjoys working outdoors, is motivated by practical conservation outcomes, and thrives in a small, field-based team environment. You'll be adaptable, self-motivated, and comfortable working both independently and alongside other rangers and a range of partners and stakeholders.

If you have some of following, we are keen to hear from you;

• Practical experience planning and delivering biodiversity work, including weed control, ecological monitoring, and conservation management.
• A high level of fitness and experience working in remote, backcountry or river environments, underpinned by a strong commitment to health, safety and wellbeing
• Sound plant identification skills and knowledge.
• Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities
• Experience building positive relationships with iwi, local council, landowners, community groups, contractors, and other stakeholders
• A natural leader, with experience leading projects, coordinating field work and mentoring others
• Good written and verbal communication skills and confidence using digital tools for data collection and reporting
• Relevant operational certifications and experience, such as 4WD, LUV and Growsafe.
• Experience using GPS/GIS and working in remote environments, including helicopter access.
• A full New Zealand driver licence
