Mid Software Engineer

  • HotDoc
  • Melbourne, Australia
  • A$120,000 – A$150,000

At HotDoc, our purpose is to improve the healthcare experience for everyone in Australia, by improving the way patients and doctors communicate. We're used by more than 5,000 clinics and over 25,000 practitioners, which means the software we build affects how millions of Australians access healthcare.

You'll join Health Continuity, one of our Mission Based Teams. The team's work directly affects continuity of patient care across our practice network — whether a patient's history follows them between appointments and between clinics.

This is a mid-level engineering role, and it is a delivery role. You own features end to end: design, build, ship to production, and support them once they are live. You work independently on well-defined work, scope it yourself, and communicate progress and blockers without being chased.

Our stack is Ruby on Rails and Ember.js, on PostgreSQL, with DataDog, Sentry and Sidekiq. If you have production Rails and a component-based JavaScript framework — React, Vue, Angular — we are genuinely happy to help you ramp on Ember. We would rather hire strong Rails judgement and teach the frontend framework than the reverse.

You will also own the operational health of what you build. Monitoring and alerting in place, a place in the on-call rotation, and blameless postmortems when something goes wrong. If a feature is not observable, it is not finished.

What You'll Do

  • Contribute to end to end delivery of products and features through delivering clear, maintainable and trusted code and leaving the codebase better than you found it.
  • Provide knowledge sharing amongst the wider team. We want you to identify opportunities to help our team run as effectively as possible (e.g. pairing, code reviews, feedback on design patterns).
  • Own the operational health of the components you build — monitoring, alerting, on-call rotation, and contributing to blameless postmortems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders in product, design, and other engineers to develop great experiences for our patients
  • Take an iterative approach to building & scaling new products and features, balancing speed to market while also placing high importance on the stability, security, and modularity of our overall systems

What You'll Bring

  • Around 3–5 years of professional software engineering experience — we care more about what you have shipped than the number.
  • Solid production experience with Ruby on Rails.
  • Experience with Ember.js, or a comparable component-based JavaScript framework and real willingness to ramp on Ember.
  • Strong fundamentals in relational databases, API design and testing practice.
  • Proven record of successfully breaking down work, estimating timelines and consistently delivering high-quality work.
  • Regular, hands-on use of AI coding assistants — Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor or similar — as a normal part of how you work, and a view on where they help and where they do not.

Nice to Have

  • Advanced debugging and incident response skills.
  • Experience contributing to technical proposals or engineering direction discussions.
  • Measured efficiency gains from AI-augmented work you can point to.
  • Health tech or another regulated, compliance-sensitive industry.
  • AWS or similar cloud infrastructure; DataDog, Sentry, Sidekiq or Metabase.

Why This Role

  • Meaningful impact — this team's work directly affects continuity of patient care across HotDoc's practice network.
  • Flexible working — hybrid, with a minimum of one day per week at our Melbourne HQ.
  • A clear, transparent engineering career ladder with well-defined progression signals, so you know exactly what "next level" looks like.
  • A team culture that genuinely values quality, mentorship and thoughtful AI adoption — senior engineers close at hand for the ambiguous problems.
