We are a welcoming, collaborative, and human-centric workplace that manages essentials of the full employee experience – from recruitment and selection through offboarding. We deliver people-focused programs, including health and wellness and professional development. We manage and implement the County’s HR policy, EEO and salary plans. OHR values diverse perspectives and lived experiences and encourages BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color), immigrants, women, LGBTQIA+, individuals with disabilities, and veterans to apply.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The Office of Human Resources (OHR) is seeking a skilled and collaborative Leave Management Specialist (Administrative Specialist II) to join the Leave Management team. In this role, you will be responsible for reviewing and adjudicating employee medical leave requests, managing cases from intake through closure, and helping employees and supervisors understand their rights and responsibilities under applicable leave laws and County policies. This is an excellent opportunity for an HR professional who wants to build deep expertise in leave administration within one of the region's largest local governments — and who finds real satisfaction in helping people through some of the most challenging moments of their working lives.
This job is for you if you:
- Can translate complex regulatory requirements into clear, plain-language guidance for employees who are stressed or uncertain.
- Take pride in getting the details right — accurate case records, timely notices, and well-documented decisions matter to you.
- Approach sensitive situations with discretion, professionalism, and empathy.
- Enjoy teaching and find satisfaction in helping supervisors and employees feel confident about a process they may not know well.
- Thrive in a structured, compliance-driven environment and welcome opportunities to improve how things work.
Examples of duties
When a County employee faces a serious health event or a significant life circumstance, the Leave Management Specialist is often the first person who helps them understand their options and navigate a complex process with confidence. This is meaningful, people-centered work — and it requires someone who brings both rigorous attention to regulatory detail and genuine care for the employees they serve.
Major duties include but are not limited to:
- Evaluate employee requests for eligibility and entitlement under FMLA, PWFA, and applicable state and County leave laws.
- Adjudicate requests for intermittent and reduced-schedule leave and monitor active cases through return to work.
- Manage case records in the leave management system from intake through closure, maintaining complete and accurate documentation.
- Coordinate with HR and Payroll teams to ensure proper application of leave pay and benefit continuation.
- Issue notices to employees at key case milestones and respond to records requests and audit inquiries.
- Develop and deliver group training sessions for employees and supervisors on leave rights, responsibilities, and processes.
- Provide clear, accurate, and empathetic guidance to individuals navigating the leave process.
- Create job aids, quick-reference guides, and other self-service resources to support leave program education across the organization.
- Stay current on changes to federal and state leave law and share updates with the team.
- Identify process gaps and contribute to the development of SOPs and procedural improvements within the unit.
