DESCRIPTION:

As a Staff Engineer, Mechanical R&D, at Thermo Fisher Scientific, you will contribute significantly to driving innovation and excellence across our operations. You'll lead strategic initiatives to optimize cost, ensure quality, and generate value while working with advanced technologies that help make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer. Working closely with cross-functional teams including R&D, product development, quality, and procurement, you'll focus on mechanical components and assemblies while ensuring strict quality standards and risk mitigation. This position offers opportunities to influence product design, drive manufacturing improvements, and collaborate with teams on breakthrough solutions.

1. Responsibilities and Authorities

Mechanical Staff Engineer may be tasked to lead a mechanical/Industrial Design team and to ensure adequate resources to projects. Capable of technical leading multiple functions in an assigned project and to manage project timeline in ensuring successful launch of product. Others include:

  • Generates/Provides conceptual proposal in supporting mechanical design review.
  • Provide/Guide team on mechanical architecture and together coordinating with design center on finalizing industrial design.
  • Execute/Review/Approve detail design utilizing 3-dimensional modeling and 2-dimensional detail drawings.
  • Proficient in 3D CAD modeling preferably Solidworks.
  • Establish modular design and full product bill of material structure.
  • Create/Review/Approve sub-assembly test plan and report if any.
  • Ensuring team's design fully integrated into mechanical architecture and design robustness.
  • Provide coaching to the juniors and suggest design enhancement if necessary.
  • Ability to work with vendors on design for manufacturability and supplier/vendor on cost negotiation in order to achieve product Cost of Goods Sold (COGS).
  • Good understanding of design to cost target on mechanical architecture.
  • Ability to manage a team and drive for results
  • Drive/contribute to technology and innovation into R&D portal
  • Support and assign to technology development if any

2. Qualification

  • Degree/Master in Mechanical Engineering

3. Experiences

  • Mechanical design in product development life cycle.
  • Design for Manufacturing in machining, casting, plastics injection molding and sheetmetal.
  • Geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Good knowledge in optomechanical, electromechanical mechanism and mechanism design.
  • Familiar in in analyzing flow/thermal characteristics (CFD/flow simulation).
  • Completed and lead at least one product life cycle design.
  • Project management

4. Competencies Preferred

  • Familiar with Flow cytometry
