Customs Clearance Specialist

Job Summary

The Customs Clearance Specialist will oversee and coordinate day-to-day import customs clearance, freight forwarding, and port/terminal logistics operations in Accra, Ghana. The role is responsible for daily tracking of clearing agents, auditing logistics and agency invoices, monitoring container movements, supporting warehouse offloading, managing MPS/ICUMS systems, and ensuring minimal operational delays and demurrage costs.

Key Responsibilities & Operational Duties

Customs Clearance & Agent Coordination

  • Daily tracking and follow-up of clearing agent progress to ensure timely customs clearance.
  • Coordinate and oversee air cargo clearances and third-party clearance activities.
  • Identify and handle exceptions or abnormal situations during the clearance process in coordination with supervisors.

Systems, Portals & Project Support

  • Assist in updating and maintaining data integrity within the Customs Management System (ICUMS).
  • Continuously monitor and track shipments via the MPS portal during and after system migration.
  • Assist with logistics execution and support for key operational initiatives, including the Site 10 project.

Logistics Cost Management & Invoice Auditing

  • Review, audit, and verify all logistics fee compositions and agent invoices for accuracy before processing.

Container & Terminal Operations

  • High sensitivity and proactive tracking of container arrivals, diversions, offloading, and return of empty containers to shipping lines to eliminate demurrage and detention fees.
  • Handle follow-ups on cargo damage issues and coordinate with shipping lines for cargo surveys.

Warehouse & Offloading Coordination

  • Coordinate warehouse follow-ups, assigning specific warehouse teams to manage offloading schedules and resolve operational challenges on-site.

General Support

  • Perform other operational tasks and duties assigned by the department manager and supervisor.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Import/Export Customs Operations, Logistics & Transportation, Terminal Operations, Freight Forwarding, or a related field.
  • Work Experience: Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in freight forwarding, highway transport, port/terminal yards, or supply chain logistics.
  • Domain Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of Ghanaian customs clearance procedures, shipping line workflows, port terminal processes, and supply chain management.
