Summary

General Description

Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in installing, maintaining, and repairing plumbing systems and apparatus associated with city buildings and facilities; performs related work as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Working knowledge of the standard practices, tools and materials of the plumbing trade; of state and local plumbing codes; of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Skill in the use of tools, materials and equipment used in the plumbing trade. Ability to read, interpret and work from sketches, blueprints and specifications; to inspect projects for adherence to quality of work, codes and engineering drawings; to understand and carry out general oral and written instructions; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.

Essential Functions:

  • Troubleshoot, repair, inspect, install and replace plumbing equipment including, but not limited to, toilets, sinks, water heaters, drinking fountains, drains, valves, and piping for air, gas, steam and waste systems.
  • Unclog slow-moving and clogged drain lines.
  • Provide work direction as needed to plumbing contractors and internal maintenance staff working on plumbing jobs or projects.
  • Enter work performed into the City’s approved work order/inventory management system.
  • Respond to emergency plumbing calls, and evaluate situations and implement proper corrective actions.
  • Perform after-hour maintenance activities as assigned by the Department.
  • Perform emergency response activities assigned to personnel designated as essential personnel.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

High school diploma or GED; four years of experience as a plumber; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of a Journeyman or Master Plumber license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is required or the applicant must obtain the license within nine months of their hire date.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

Must possess a valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia
