Principal Mechanical Engineer (TVS)

UGL is home to one of Australia’s largest in-house engineering teams, delivering complex transport and infrastructure projects nationwide. As part of the CIMIC Group, we bring long term stability, technical depth and genuine career pathways.

This permanent full time position will be based out of Brisbane’s CBD and your first assignment will be to support a major greenfield rail project in South East Queensland. This next stage of work involves delivering new dual-track rail, tunnels, stations and stabling infrastructure, a large-scale expansion that will help shape the region’s long-term transport network.

Why this role

  • Get involved early in a major greenfield rail project and influence its electrical design solutions.
  • Work as a principal-level subject matter expert across complex HV, LV and traction power packages.
  • Contribute throughout the design lifecycle, including interdisciplinary coordination, technical reviews and verification.
  • Act as a technical reference authority and mentor engineers within your discipline.
  • Collaborate with clients, interface teams and multidisciplinary engineering specialists.
  • Build a long-term career with UGL’s strong project pipeline and the stability of the CIMIC Group.

About the role

As Principal Electrical Engineer, you will provide subject matter expertise across allocated electrical design tasks for a major rail infrastructure project. You will develop and review technical solutions, ensure design documentation meets project requirements and help maintain a consistent approach to interfaces, deliverables and engineering processes.

Working with project, design, systems assurance, construction and commissioning teams, you will coordinate electrical design activities and help resolve complex technical issues. You will also act as a technical reference authority, participate in client technical working groups and provide mentoring and technical support to other engineers.

Candidates with extensive traction power design experience on major rail infrastructure projects are strongly encouraged to apply.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and review electrical engineering solutions across HV, LV and relevant traction power design packages.
  • Produce and check drawings, calculations and technical specifications for major electrical equipment, including switchboards and uninterruptible power supply systems.
  • Review design outputs to ensure they satisfy project, safety, environmental, construction, commissioning and operational requirements.
  • Coordinate electrical designs across disciplines and work with internal and external interface and integration teams.
  • Participate in design reviews and electrical technical working groups, resolving technical issues with clients and project stakeholders.
  • Monitor the programme and cost of allocated design tasks, escalating changes or delivery risks where required.
  • Act as a technical reference authority while mentoring engineers and supporting a high-performance engineering culture.

What we offer

  • Benefit from 16 weeks of paid primary parental leave.
  • Complimentary salary continuance insurance.
  • Discounted Medibank health insurance.

About you

  • A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, engineering science or another relevant engineering discipline.
  • Chartered Professional Engineer status.
  • At least 15 years of relevant industry experience, ideally including experience within the rail sector.
  • Extensive technical experience in HV and LV electrical design, with knowledge of AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS 3008 and AS/NZS 2067.
  • Extensive traction power design experience on major rail infrastructure projects will be highly regarded.
  • Experience delivering engineering solutions in rail or another safety-critical environment, such as defence, automotive or avionics.
  • Strong communication, technical judgement and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work independently, mentor engineers and manage competing priorities.
