Lecturer - Optometry

• Make a meaningful impact on rural, remote and Aboriginal eye health through a unique clinician-educator role based in Geraldton.

• Full-time appointment on a fixed term basis for 12 months.
• Base salary range: Level B, $122,876 – $145,404 p.a. (pro-rata) plus 17% superannuation.

The School of Health and Clinical Sciences at the University of Western Australia is a research-intensive academic environment where excellence in research underpins teaching, learning and community impact. This position is based in Geraldton at the Western Australian Centre for Rural Health (WACRH), one of Australia's Commonwealth-funded University Departments of Rural Health. WACRH works to improve rural, remote and Aboriginal health through education, research, student placement programs and community engagement.

Working closely with the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences, you will contribute to the delivery of culturally safe eye care services, student education and rural workforce development, supporting improved health outcomes across regional Western Australia.

About the opportunity

• Deliver culturally safe optometry services within an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (ACCHO), outreach programs and school-based screening initiatives while helping improve eye health outcomes in rural and remote communities.
• Coordinate and supervise optometry student placements, facilitate clinical education and remote learning activities, and contribute to developing the next generation of socially accountable optometrists.
• Build partnerships with healthcare providers, community organisations and research collaborators to expand eye health services, interprofessional learning opportunities and community-focused research initiatives.

About you

• Therapeutically endorsed optometrist registered with AHPRA, with a commitment to delivering high-quality, person-centred and culturally safe care.
• Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with students, health professionals, community organisations and other stakeholders through strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Highly organised and self-motivated, with the ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and adapt within a dynamic rural healthcare environment.
• Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving and stakeholder engagement capabilities, with a strong commitment to teamwork and continuous improvement.
• Desirable: postgraduate qualifications, teaching experience and/or experience working in rural, remote or Aboriginal health settings.
