Position Overview
The Accounting Assistant I is an entry-level accounting professional responsible for supporting the maintenance of financial records and assisting with routine accounting activities. This role performs basic accounting functions, including calculating, posting, and verifying financial transactions, while developing foundational accounting knowledge and industry expertise. The Accounting Assistant I works under the guidance of more experienced team members and contributes to the accuracy and integrity of financial data.
Primary Responsibilities
- Maintain financial records by performing routine accounting tasks, including calculating, posting, and verifying financial transactions.
- Assist with accounts payable, payroll, travel and expense processing, costing activities, and other accounting functions as assigned.
- Support the preparation of financial statements, budget reports, and other financial reports for management review.
- Review and reconcile financial information to help ensure accuracy and compliance with established procedures.
- Perform basic financial analysis to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for process improvement.
- Organize, maintain, and update accounting documentation and records.
- Collaborate with internal team members to support departmental goals and financial reporting requirements.
- Follow company policies, accounting standards, and internal controls.
- Participate in training and development opportunities to build accounting knowledge and professional skills.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
- Basic understanding of accounting principles and financial processes.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to perform data entry and maintain financial records.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while following guidance from team members and supervisors.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
Preferred Requirements
- Previous internship, coursework, or experience in an accounting or finance-related environment.
- Familiarity with accounting software or enterprise financial systems.
- Understanding of accounts payable, payroll, general ledger, or expense management processes.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new systems and processes quickly.
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams in a professional environment.
