Job Summary

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely operating, transporting, loading, unloading, inspecting, and maintaining a wide variety of military and commercial heavy equipment supporting War Reserve Material (WRM) operations and installation support functions. The position operates advanced technology construction and material-handling equipment, including electronically controlled diesel-powered systems, hydraulic equipment, rough-terrain lifting equipment, earthmoving equipment, and specialized military assets.

The incumbent will load and unload heavy equipment from lowboy trailers, transport vehicles, rail assets, and military aircraft; support inspections, inventory actions, preservation activities, and shipment preparation; and operate equipment in support of civil engineering, airfield maintenance, logistics, and construction projects. The position requires extensive knowledge of heavy equipment operating principles, safety standards, load securement requirements, and preventive maintenance practices.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Operate a variety of military and commercial heavy equipment, including but not limited to:
    • Bulldozers
    • Excavators
    • Backhoes
    • Motor graders
    • Front-end loaders
    • Rough-terrain forklifts
    • Telehandlers
    • Skid steers
    • Trenchers
    • Sweepers
    • Tractors and trailers
    • Specialized WRM vehicles and support equipment
  • Safely load, unload, transport, and position heavy equipment on lowboy trailers, flatbed trailers, railcars, and military cargo aircraft.
  • Conduct movement of WRM assets for inspections, maintenance, preservation, inventory, deployment, redeployment, and shipment preparation.
  • Operate advanced electronically controlled construction equipment utilizing onboard diagnostics, telematics, electronic control modules, hydraulic systems, and computerized operating systems.
  • Perform operator-level preventive maintenance, inspections, servicing, troubleshooting, and minor repairs.
  • Complete vehicle inspections and identify equipment discrepancies requiring corrective maintenance.
  • Perform operational checks on hydraulic, electrical, fuel, water distribution, and power generation systems associated with WRM equipment.
  • Install, remove, and operate specialized attachments and auxiliary equipment as required.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable safety standards, Air Force Instructions (AFIs), Technical Orders (TOs), commercial technical manuals, OSHA requirements, host nation regulations, and company policies.
  • Perform equipment recovery, towing, lifting, rigging, and material handling operations.
  • Serve as a Vehicle Control Official (VCO) or alternate VCO when assigned and maintain required documentation and accountability records.
  • Maintain equipment utilization logs, maintenance records, inspection forms, and operational documentation.
  • Support airfield operations, civil engineering projects, grounds maintenance, logistics operations, and other heavy equipment requirements across the installation.
  • Coordinate with maintenance personnel, logistics staff, airfield management, and operational work centers to support mission requirements.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards and ensure proper care and accountability of assigned tools and equipment.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizen (American National).
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience operating heavy construction equipment and material handling equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience loading and unloading heavy equipment onto trailers and transport platforms.
  • Working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, operating procedures, load charts, and safety requirements.
  • Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC).
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Valid U.S. State Driver's License.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A preferred; ability to obtain if not currently held.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CDL Class A with air brake endorsement.
  • NCCCO certification or equivalent crane/lifting equipment certification.
  • Military heavy equipment operator experience.
  • Experience supporting Air Force, Army, or other Department of Defense logistics and WRM programs.
  • Experience operating Caterpillar, John Deere, Volvo, Komatsu, JCB, Case, or equivalent heavy equipment platforms.
  • Experience with electronically controlled and computer-assisted heavy equipment systems.
  • Familiarity with Air Force vehicle management programs and VCO requirements.
  • Knowledge of cargo loading, aircraft loading support, rigging, tie-down procedures, and load securement requirements.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications for maintenance and logistics documentation.
