The position has been established primarily to support the Business Solutions Division in the commercial management of projects throughout their execution lifecycle.
The Commercial Project Engineer supports the management of assigned projects from contract award and project handover through execution and final commercial close-out. The role focuses on monitoring the commercial health of projects, administering contractual and commercial requirements, supporting invoicing and revenue forecasting, assessing variations and claims, and identifying commercial risks and opportunities.
The candidate will be required to combine engineering knowledge, commercial awareness, contractual understanding, and strong analytical capability to evaluate the financial and commercial impact of project developments. The position also requires the ability to perform quantity surveying activities, including the measurement and remeasurement of executed works, reconciliation of contractual quantities, and application of contractual price-adjustment and escalation mechanisms.
The Commercial Project Engineer will work closely with Project Management, Contract Management, Engineering, Planning, Operations, Finance, Legal, and other relevant functions. Gradually, the candidate will interface with national and international clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and other project stakeholders and will assume increasing responsibility for the commercial management of complex, high-value engineering projects.
It is essential that the candidate is able to prioritize activities, coordinate multidisciplinary inputs, prepare accurate and timely commercial analyses, maintain comprehensive supporting records, and communicate clearly substantiated commercial positions.
Main Responsibilities
- Reviewing awarded contracts, tender assumptions, qualifications, clarifications, and commercial terms to establish and understand the contractual and commercial baseline of each project.
- Participating in the handover from the Proposals Team and collect key contractual obligations, commercial risks, exclusions, assumptions, and commitments.
- Supporting the Commercial Manager, Project Manager and Contract Manager in the day-to-day commercial and contractual management of assigned projects, from contract award through final close-out.
- Identifying changes to the agreed scope, schedule, quantities, execution methodology, or project assumptions that may result in additional cost, time, revenue, or contractual entitlement.
- Maintaining accurate and up-to-date registers for project revenue, invoicing, variations, claims, commercial risks and opportunities.
- Coordinating with Engineering, Planning, Operations, Finance, Legal, and other relevant functions to obtain and consolidate the inputs required for commercial assessments and analyses.
- Monitoring the contractual value, approved and pending variations, commercial opportunities, potential liabilities, and overall commercial exposure of assigned projects.
- Supporting the review and periodic update of project revenue, cost, cash-flow, and commercial forecasts in coordination with Project Management and Finance.
- Monitoring contractual payment milestones, and coordinating the collection and submission of the supporting documentation required for timely invoicing and payment.
- Following up on invoice certification, payment status, retentions, deductions, overdue receivables, and client queries in cooperation with Finance and the Project Teams.
- Preparing accurate and timely commercial reports and management updates covering variations, claims, invoicing, receivables, contractual matters, risks and opportunities, and the forecast commercial outcome of assigned projects.
- Participating in internal and, where required, external commercial meetings and supporting negotiations through structured analyses, appropriate documentation, and clearly substantiated commercial positions.
- Supporting the commercial health of assigned projects by performing quantity surveying, measurement and remeasurement of executed works, reconciliation of contractual quantities, application of price-adjustment and escalation mechanisms, and preparation of any other commercial analysis required under the contract.
- Adhering to all compliance and auditing requirements for the conduct of ethical and transparent operations, including compliance with all Asso Group policies, guidelines, procedures, and applicable approval authorities.
- Complying with Health, Safety, and Environmental policies and procedures, as well as all applicable audit and inspection requirements.
Requirements
- A higher university degree in Engineering, preferably supplemented by studies or professional training in Commercial Management, Contract Management, Project Management, Quantity Surveying, Finance, or Business Administration.
- More than three years of relevant experience in commercial project management, project engineering, contract administration, quantity surveying, cost control, proposals, or another similar project-based position.
- Sound understanding of commercial and contractual principles, including project changes, variations, claims, payment terms, invoicing milestones, retentions, guarantees, and contractual obligations.
- Ability to perform quantity surveying activities, including measurement and remeasurement of executed works, quantity reconciliation, valuation of works, and verification of contractual quantities.
- Ability to understand and apply contractual price-adjustment, escalation, indexation, and other compensation mechanisms.
- Strong analytical and numerical skills, with the ability to prepare accurate, well-structured, and clearly substantiated commercial analyses.
- Clear and effective oral and written communication skills in the English language, including the ability to prepare professional commercial correspondence and management reports.
- Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Working knowledge of ERP systems, preferably SAP, and experience with project reporting, commercial-management, or document-management systems will be considered an advantage.
- Strong commercial awareness, attention to detail, organizational capability, and the ability to manage multiple priorities within demanding deadlines.
- Proactive and collaborative approach, with the ability to coordinate effectively across technical, operational, financial, legal, and project-management functions.
- Ability to work independently, exercise sound professional judgment, maintain confidentiality, and operate effectively within an international and multicultural project environment.
