Job Description:
About the Role
This is a rotational assignment reporting to the Expat Deputy Base Management Team Lead within the Rumaila Subsurface Team. Working alongside the BOC Team Leader, you will provide technical and people leadership to a team of 18 Iraqi Petroleum Engineers responsible for managing more than 300 producing wells across one of the world's largest onshore oil fields.
The team supports production of up to 850,000 barrels of oil per day across seven degassing stations, delivering base management activities, production optimization, well intervention planning, and reservoir surveillance. A key part of the role is developing local engineering capability while integrating base management activities across reservoir, operations, wells, and projects teams.
Rumaila is entering a significant growth phase, with the active well count expected to increase from approximately 500 wells today to more than 1,500 wells over the next decade. This includes a major drilling campaign, ongoing workover activity, and extensive rigless intervention programs.
What You'll Do
- Lead and develop a team of petroleum engineers responsible for well and production system performance.
- Drive safe operations by actively demonstrating and promoting Rumaila's safety leadership principles.
- Maximize production performance and support delivery of annual production targets.
- Oversee the planning and execution of approximately 12 workover and 15 rigless intervention Statements of Requirement (SORs) per month.
- Manage the Opportunity Management Hopper for base wells and maintain high data quality standards.
- Coach engineers in production optimization, surveillance, and system modelling techniques.
- Ensure natural flow and ESP wells operate within agreed performance and operating limits.
- Set surveillance priorities to balance production delivery with reservoir management objectives.
- Ensure compliance with reservoir pressure management requirements and Iraqi regulatory expectations.
- Develop and execute a long-term capability-building plan for Iraqi Petroleum Engineers.
- Act as a key interface between the Rumaila team and technical support teams based in Sunbury.
Experience & Qualifications
Essential
- Bachelor's degree in Petroleum Engineering or a related discipline.
- Strong experience in subsurface, production, or reservoir engineering roles.
- Experience leading and developing teams of petroleum engineers.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience working across subsurface, wells, operations, and project disciplines.
- Strong knowledge of production optimization and well performance management.
- Experience with ESP operations and modelling.
- Proficiency with Prosper and GAP software.
- Experience planning and supporting well interventions, including coiled tubing, stimulation, and surveillance activities.
- Demonstrated ability to coach and develop engineering talent.
Preferred
- Experience managing waterfloods in sandstone and/or carbonate reservoirs.
- Knowledge of Pressure Transient Analysis (PTA).
- Experience working on large brownfield production assets with significant development activity.
What You Will Work With
You will work closely with subsurface, wells, operations, and project teams responsible for one of the world's largest producing oil fields. The role requires regular engagement with Iraqi engineers, field operations personnel, drilling and intervention teams, reservoir engineers, and technical specialists located both in Rumaila and at support centers in Sunbury.
Success in the role depends on building strong relationships, influencing across functions, and integrating technical expertise with operational priorities.
