POSITION SUMMARY

Ambassadors of the Environment - Naturalist

Lead programs for kids ages 4+, teens, adults, families, and group activities, such as snorkeling, kayaking, underwater photography, botanic park (terrestrial) tours, sustainable living lessons, arts & crafts, etc. Explain and promote the rules and regulations of the recreation facility intended for the safety and welfare of guests and members. Observe activity in the recreational facility and respond appropriately in accordance with local operating procedures in the event of an emergency. Demonstrate knowledge of local and cultural heritage. Prepare for each activity, ensuring that the co-naturalist or attendant is also prepared with any necessary materials. Guide tours whilst conveying scientific information, tailored to the level of the guest(s) on the tour. Ensure operation of the Ambassadors of the Environment program in relation to curriculum preparation and development. Ensure preparedness of program with any necessary materials and have confidence in guiding the group at all times. Participate in the creation of new activities as needed.

Required Qualifications:
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Sciences, Environmental and Earth Sciences, Life Sciences, Sustainability Sciences, Recreation: Parks and Tourism Science, Education/Child Development, OR equivalent field of study OR professional level certification in equivalent field such as PADI/SDI Dive Master
• Excellent verbal and written skills in English
• Experience working with children ages 4 to 18
• Related Work Experience: At least 1 year of related professional experience as a guide in nature and/or working with children in education OR Experience leading recreational tours and supervising groups in a variety of environmental conditions
• A willingness and passion for working with children and educating the next generation about the environment
• Must be a strong swimmer and snorkeler: swimming test is mandatory during first week of employment
• Swimming Ability: must be able to swim 500 meters unassisted in open water, must be able to tread water for 10 minutes
• Must be able to kayak
• Strong team player
• Able to energize the Ritz-Carlton culture and mission of Ambassadors of the Environment
• Ability to work a flexible scheduled including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds
• Driving: must have a clean driving record and be at least 25 years of age. As per company’s insurance policy, individuals who are at least 25 years of age and over with a valid driving license can operate vehicles.
Operate the company vehicle to transport guests to off property excursion sites, transporting equipment and collecting supplies for the department from various locations across the Island.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Lifeguard Certification
• Working knowledge and experience in coral reef ecology, mangrove ecology, or environmental education
• CPR Certification
• Oxygen Certification
• First Aid Certification
• Micros, Microsoft Office, computer skills
• Work experience in a luxury hospitality environment
• Language skills in addition to English
• Any certification or training required by local and state agencies

Observe activity in the recreational facility and respond appropriately in accordance with local operating procedure in the event of an emergency. Be aware of possible situations where guests are not able to safely participate in an activity and inform supervisor/manager. Demonstrate knowledge of local and cultural heritage. Prepare for each activity, ensuring that the co-naturalist or attendant is also prepared with any necessary materials, and guiding the group at all times.

Follow company policies and procedures; maintain confidentiality of proprietary information; protect company assets. Report accidents, injuries, and unsafe work conditions to manager; complete safety training and certifications. Welcome and acknowledge all guests according to company standards; anticipate and address guests’ service needs; assist individuals with disabilities; thank guests with genuine appreciation. Speak with others using clear and professional language; answer telephones using appropriate etiquette. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with others. Ensure adherence to quality expectations and standards; identify, recommend, develop, and implement new ways to increase organizational quality. Visually inspect tools, equipment, or machines; move over sloping, uneven, or slippery surfaces; stand, sit, or walk for an extended period of time. Move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 75 pounds without assistance. Perform other reasonable job duties as requested.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

Bachelors’ degree from an accredited university or college in the Environmental Sciences or equivalent.

Related Work Experience: At least 1 year of related work experience.

Supervisory Experience: No supervisory experience.
