Job title: Shift Lead - nights (Temporary, fixed term for 6 months)

Reporting to: Manufacturing Manager

Location: Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk

Hours: 38 hours per week (Monday to Thursday, 20.45 – 06.15)

The Opportunity

Responsible for Operations, supporting the Production Manager with the day-to-day management of the Shift Team, overseeing operations and ensuring safe and efficient performance in achieving business targets. This role forms part of the working team but is key to directing the team and acting as a point of contact for the Shift Team.

What you’ll be doing

The responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to:

Strategy & Planning

To operate in accordance with the Company’s Environment, Health, Safety, Security and Quality Standards.

To report accurately and effectively on the daily progress of production, including any delays and their causes, to the Production Manager so that appropriate decisions can be made to minimise the effects on customer deliveries, production efficiency and future production planning. Advise on manning levels, the scheduling of production tasks and any issues that may impact production timelines.

Communicate with all stakeholders to ensure the plan is followed and remains aligned with achieving the weekly On Time in Full (OTIF) plan.

Operational Management

Lead a ‘right first time’ policy and help to ensure that all orders are met on time and within specification.

Ensure the accuracy of stock movements, the closing of Works Orders and good inventory control.

Ensure 100% Plan vs Actual and that operators are fully utilised.

Oversee and provide support to the distillation process and Control Panel Operator (CPO).

Ensure process controls are followed and fully documented, and that all downtime is captured.

Complete a comprehensive written shift report and provide a verbal handover to ensure the safe and efficient running of all processes.

Execute and lead all Toolbox Talks relating to Continuous Improvement activities within the factory.

Ensure a 5S schedule is in place and that high standards of housekeeping and 5S are maintained within the department.

Coordinate the safe start-up and shutdown of all equipment and ancillary equipment within the department.

Control stock and ensure the accuracy of stock within production areas. Facilitate stock checks as agreed.

Support the delivery and deployment of a Lean culture and behaviours within the organisation. Contribute to a Continuous Improvement process to improve, optimise and make processes and operations safer. Lead Continuous Improvement activity within the shift to improve, optimise and make processes and operations safer. Review and seek to improve labour and equipment efficiencies in conjunction with the Production Manager.

Maintain high standards of GMP and BRC compliance across all aspects of production and ensure GMP and daily walk-through actions are closed out.

Demonstrate good awareness of safe working practices, risk assessment, HACCP and general process safety, and ensure these are communicated to all staff. Take the lead in developing an excellent safety culture generally and specifically in relation to manual handling, vehicle/pedestrian safety, PPE and accident/incident reporting.

Check goods and paperwork to ensure that we achieve right first time across the site and that paperwork is completed correctly.

Ensure all cleaning schedules are followed and all checklists relating to environmental and machine cleaning are completed.

Carry out internal investigations into CAPAs, complaints and non-conformances. Ensure corrective and preventive actions are in place, deadlines are met and evidence is available to support solutions.

Understand the Distillation processes, enabling informed decisions to be made alongside Control Panel Operators. Interpret process instructions to populate Distillation Cuts for the N-items list and print the correct labels: Start, Comp/Pot and Fractions.

Print WD paperwork in line with planning schedules.

Monitor and manage the requirements of the Skyliner utilities. Ensure checklists are completed daily/weekly and areas of responsibility are maintained to allow full functionality.

People

Monitoring team performance and working with the People Team and Production Manager to address poor performance, supported by the Production Manager where required.

Attend Regular 121’s with all Manufacturing staff, this is documented as well as any other communication.

Responsible for Warehouse operators on night shift performance and administration.

Prepare and communicate performance reviews to members of the manufacturing teams. Ensure reviews are accurate with data driven evidence to support scoring system inline with managers tool kit.

Co-ordinate with Production Manager that minimum staffing levels are maintained. Capture all leave and ensure Holiday rules are adhered to and there is sufficient cover across all shifts for critical tasks.

Co-ordinate training for staff in all aspects of the Manufacturing Operators role.

Implementation of training plan and ensure operators have a programme which addresses competency assessment and training gaps identified through the process.

Ensure SOP’s and process cleaning procedures are relevant and up to date. Make small changes if required and report major deviations to Manager. Ensure all the operators are operating safety and all the Safety Critical Tasks are trained and Training records up to date.

To ensure that Toolbox Talks and Risk Assessment, together with any Safety Bulletins issued, are carried out in line with the required schedule

To promote the right employee behaviour and conduct of employees through coaching and mentoring. Provide day to day leadership, guidance and support for the team, creating an open and inclusive environment. Encourage teamwork and contribute to increasing morale through involvement, training and recognition. Conduct annual appraisals for the team.

Health, Safety & Environment

Maintain site security out of hours and ensure that all buildings are locked and alarmed, with any problems reported through the Asset Care Department.

Carry out accident and incident investigations and ensure reports are written and submitted to the Production Manager.

Contribute to a robust approach to Food Hygiene, HACCP and Quality, ensuring all relevant regulations are met.

Contribute to an excellent safety culture generally and specifically in relation to manual handling, vehicle/pedestrian safety, PPE and accident/incident reporting.

What we’re looking for

Proven leadership experience.

An understanding of BRC and Customer Quality Standards.

Knowledge of working within a Lean environment.

Competence in computer operation, including producing reports, using email and entering data as required, including the use of the JDE system.

Proven production experience that demonstrates the ability to deliver a production plan effectively.
