Required Skills

Living Conditions

Volunteers will live and serve in communities ranging from small towns to large cities primarily in central Mexico. Volunteers will live with host families during training and at least the first three months of service. Volunteers may need to commute up to an hour on public transportation to reach the assigned public university. Living conditions vary widely, with some areas having intermittent internet or phone service.

Activities

Plan and teach student-centered English language lessons alongside faculty.

Facilitate communities of practice for teachers.

Mentor students through feedback, advising, and academic support.

Deliver workshops or presentations in English for faculty and students.

Facilitate extracurricular English activities, such as conversation sessions or cultural events.

Support students preparing résumés, presentations, or job interviews.

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as environmental clubs or youth sports.

Training

As a University English Teacher, you will be trained on co-teaching strategies, facilitating communities of practice, and delivering workshops that support English learning. Peace Corps/Mexico will teach you Spanish to help you comfortably live in and connect with the community. You will also receive language resources and learn regional vocabulary.

After 10 weeks of training, you will move to an urban or semi-urban community where you will collaborate with public universities. You will work with the community to assess the needs and develop solutions based on shared educational priorities.

Couple Types

Only heterosexual couples can be accepted for this program.

Couple Sector Combinations

Each person must apply separately and qualify for a position in the same sector as their partner.

Couple Training Conditions

Same-sector couples may live with different host families during training but will see each other for joint-training sessions and may have time together on weekends.

Couple Living Conditions

Couples who are selected for the same sector will live together but work with different local partners, which may be in the same community or in neighboring communities (not more than 30 minutes apart).
