Position Information

The Fort Bend Area Engineer Office is looking for a driven and detail-oriented Transportation Engineering Tech I or II to join our team. You’ll be a part of the design team developing roadway construction projects that improve transportation in Fort Bend and Waller Counties. With projects ranging from major highway improvements to local roadway upgrades, you’ll gain hands-on experience, expand your skills, and grow within the transportation industry—all while helping shape the future of transportation in Fort Bend County. Position Description

Transportation Engineer Tech I

Performs basic design work and calculations. Performs field work; uses automated systems. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

• Performs basic design work.
• Performs intermediate drafting and calculations in support of design activities; accomplishes non-routine and complex assignments.
• Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps
• Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
• Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System.
• Works on reproduction of plans.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Transportation Engineer Tech II

Performs intermediate design work and calculations; performs field work; uses automated systems and learns specialized procedures. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

The essential duties of this job include those listed above and the following

• Performs advanced drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features.
• Performs intermediate design work.
• Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Transportation Engineer Tech I

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience: No experience required.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Transportation Engineer Tech II

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience: 2 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Transportation Engineer Tech I and II

• Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
• Lifting - raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
• Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
• Hearing - perceive sound at normal speaking levels;receive information by oral communication
• Repetitive Motion - substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
• Close Visual Acuity - work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
