What’s the role?

The Environmental Specialist reports to the Environmental Manager, and the primary role is to support the Environmental Team with sampling, waste management, site inspections, and reporting tasks. The specialist will also support and oversee onsite contractors as needed to facilitate site work. The specialist will support site activities to manage waste streams and act as a first responder for spill response.

Duties include:

  • Conduct compliance monitoring and quality control audits as needed.
  • Write and maintain environmental plans.
  • Understand and investigate permit questions and local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Conduct field inspections, e.g., RTP, DSTF, SWPP, SPCC, Waste, and prepare reports.
  • Develop and update waste management policies and procedures.
  • Train site staff on proper handling of hazardous waste.
  • Collect, synthesize, and report environmental data, such as emission and atmospheric monitoring measurements, meteorological and mineralogical information, soil or water samples, or other field data.
  • Maintain and calibrate sampling equipment/instruments/apparatus.
  • Set-up equipment or stations to monitor or collect environmental data.
  • Prepare samples for testing and analysis – groundwater, surface water and waste samples.
  • Record test data and prepare reports, summaries and charts that interpret the results.
  • Maintain sampling documents and records.
  • Ensure all safety related activities are undertaken in accordance with Company policy and MSHA requirements including Hazard IDs, pre-start checks, pre-start meetings, and incident reporting.
  • Maintain a high standard of housekeeping in all work areas.
  • Acquire and maintain DOT 49 CFR shipping certification.
  • Acquire and maintain EPA 40 CFR Hazardous waste management certification.
  • Obtain and keep current EPA Method 9 Visible Emissions certification.
  • Obtain and keep current OSHA HAZWOPER training and certification.
  • Obtain and keep current AK-CESCL (Certified Erosion & Sediment Control Lead) certification.
  • Other duties as required.

The specifics:

Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor of Science Degree or advanced degree in Environmental Science, a technical discipline or the sciences or equivalent training and experience.
  • Proven ability to read, comprehend, and apply information from laws, regulations, permits, reports, technical specifications, safety data sheets and publications.
  • Computer literacy – proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Current Driver’s License.
  • Be able to pass a background check and post-offer physical.

Desired Experience & Competencies

  • Surveying experience or technical school training.
  • Current Opacity certification and HazWoper certification.
  • Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Advanced computer skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and work safely with a high regard for quality and environmental concerns.
  • Flexibility to adapt to improved procedures and practices.
  • Awareness of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Act & Regulation

The details:

Working a 15 day on, 13 day off rotating schedule up to 12 hours a day or more at a remote campsite. Extreme conditions, including but not limited to extreme and changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

Employees are required to stay on site at the company provided camp during the work rotation. Camp facilities provide dining service, games room, exercise & weight room, sauna, and accommodation rooms. Dormitory rooms have a land line phone, great Wi-Fi & cable TV. Cell service is available through Wi-Fi. The Company provides a bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok, Alaska.
