Medical Laboratory Technician

A Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs moderate- and high-complexity laboratory testing under the supervision of a Medical Technologist. This role is responsible for conducting routine and specialized analyses to support the diagnosis and treatment of disease, while ensuring accuracy, quality, and compliance with established laboratory standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., CLIA, CAP). The MLT operates and maintains laboratory instrumentation, applies independent judgment in troubleshooting test-related issues, and contributes to a safe and efficient laboratory environment aligned with organizational values.

Essential Functions

  • Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests in assigned sections in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Analyze specimens and accurately record, verify, and report test results for use in diagnosis and treatment.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instrumentation and equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Troubleshoot testing issues, instrument malfunctions, and result discrepancies using independent judgment.
  • Follow quality control, quality assurance, and safety protocols, including infection prevention and hazardous material handling.
  • Maintain laboratory supplies and assist with inventory management to support uninterrupted operations.
  • Organize and prioritize workload to meet turnaround times and compliance standards (e.g., CAP guidelines).
  • Participate in training and support orientation of new employees, students, or team members as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare staff regarding test results and procedures.
  • Adhere to all organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and customer service standards while promoting a safe and collaborative work environment.

Qualifications

Skills and Abilities

  • Understanding of laboratory testing principles, methodologies, and workflows across areas such as chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and specimen processing.

  • Knowledge of CLIA, CAP, infection control, and laboratory safety standards, including quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) practices.

  • Ability to operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment.

  • Ability to interpret test results, identify discrepancies, and resolve technical issues using sound judgment.

  • Demonstrates precision in specimen handling, test performance, documentation, and result reporting to ensure patient safety.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including accurate and timely documentation and the ability to convey laboratory information to healthcare professionals.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment.

  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team to support patient care and laboratory operations.

    Education

  • Associate’s Degree in Chemistry, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, or Medical Laboratory Technology

  • No prior experience required.

  • Recent graduates of accredited MLT programs are encouraged to apply.
