Teaching Assistant

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Teaching Assistant supports the instructor in conducting hands-on laboratory activities that reinforce fundamental computer networking concepts.

Responsibilities include :

  • Assisting students with network configuration, simulation, packet analysis, and programming exercises using GNS3, NS-3, Wireshark, and Python.
  • Helping students configure and troubleshoot network topologies, protocols, and services; guiding students in analyzing network traffic and evaluating network performance; and providing individual and small- group assistance during laboratory sessions.
  • The Teaching Assistant may also assist with preparing and testing laboratory exercises, maintaining the laboratory software environment, troubleshooting technical issues, and grading laboratory assignments and reports.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates should have successfully completed coursework in computer networking and have a working understanding of TCP/IP networking.
  • Experience with network configuration, network simulation or emulation, packet analysis, and basic programming is required.
  • Prior experience with one or more of GNS3, NS-3, Wireshark, and Python is required.

Physical Requirements (if any):

  • Knowledge of fundamental computer networking concepts, including the TCP/IP and OSI models, Ethernet, IP addressing and subnetting, routing, switching, transport-layer protocols, and common application-layer protocols.
  • Familiarity with GNS3 for network emulation, NS-3 for network simulation and performance analysis, Wireshark for packet capture and protocol analysis, and Python for networking and data-processing exercises is expected.
  • Ability to configure and troubleshoot network topologies, interpret packet captures, analyze network performance metrics, assist students with programming and simulation errors, and clearly explain networking concepts is required.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills and the ability to guide students through systematic troubleshooting and independent problem solving are also important.

Anticipated Schedule:

  • TR 3:15-5:15 in person + preparation work (total 5 hours per week).
