Position and Salary
The Attorney General’s Office is recruiting for atemporary (through December 2026), full time Legal Office Assistant in the Social & Health Services Division Olympia. This position is located in Tumwater, Washington, and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).
Legal Office Assistant Salary Range (Range 40): $43,836 - $58,392/ annually
The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

About the Social & Health Services Division Olympia
Our team of 44 attorneys and 29 professional staff works at the heart of Washington’s social safety net. We provide legal support for five state agencies, including the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) and the Health Care Authority (HCA), to provide benefits, protection, and care to some of our state’s most vulnerable and disenfranchised residents.
Our cases range from large federal court class action cases to individual administrative appeals. Our recent cases include challenges to state employee health benefits programs and a challenge to the adequacy of the state’s mental health services. We also handle a wide range of legal matters, including:
- Seeking protections for vulnerable adults at risk of abuse or neglect;
- Defending lawsuits brought by legal advocacy groups organizations on behalf of Medicaid recipients and individuals with disabilities;
- Complex civil rights challenges by residents of the Special Commitment Center for sexually violent predators;
- Civil and felony commitment hearings and trials;
- Contract disputes with medical providers and managed care organizations; and

Duties and Essential Functions of a Legal Office Assistant
The Washington State Attorney General’s Office, Social and Health Services Division, is seeking a dependable, organized, and service-oriented individual to join our team as a temporary Legal Office Assistant (LOA).
The LOA plays an important role in the division’s daily operations by providing reception, administrative, and basic litigation support to attorneys, paralegals, and professional staff. The successful candidate will be comfortable managing competing priorities, working with detailed and confidential information, and providing responsive customer service in a busy legal environment.
What You’ll Do
In this position, you will:
- Serve as the division’s primary point of contact for incoming telephone calls from the public, courts, client agencies, opposing counsel, and other stakeholders.
- Receive, process, and distribute incoming mail, legal documents, electronic faxes, and communications from shared inboxes.
- Prepare outgoing mail and deliveries using USPS, FedEx, and legal messenger services.
- Use the division’s case management system to identify case assignments, update case information, compile reports, and route documents to the appropriate staff.
- Assist with filing, serving, copying, organizing, labeling, and assembling legal documents, trial notebooks, exhibit binders, and other case materials.
- Support case closure, records retention, archiving, and disposition activities.
- Monitor and process administrative requests, purchasing invoices, vouchers, travel arrangements, reimbursements, and resource reservations.
- Maintain office supplies, safety supplies, computer equipment inventories, loaner equipment, and multifunction devices.
- Assist with employee onboarding, workstation preparation, identification badge requests, contact lists, and other administrative needs.
- Coordinate furniture requests, office moves, equipment surplus, facilities requests, and vendor service calls.
- Provide additional clerical and administrative support as assigned.

- Provides professional and courteous customer service.
- Communicates clearly and accurately in person, by telephone, and in writing.
- Is highly organized and able to manage multiple assignments and deadlines.
- Demonstrates strong attention to detail and follows established procedures.
- Exercises good judgment when handling confidential or sensitive information.
- Is comfortable learning electronic case management, purchasing, travel, and records systems.
- Works collaboratively and is willing to assist wherever needed.
- Can work independently while knowing when to ask questions or seek assistance.
- Has experience providing office, clerical, administrative, customer service, or legal support.
Experience working in a legal, court, government, or similarly deadline-driven environment is beneficial but is not required if the applicant demonstrates strong transferable administrative skills and the ability to learn new processes.

Required Qualifications
Option 1: High School diploma or equivalent and two years of clerical experience including a minimum of six months of experience in a legal office environment.
Option 2: One year of legal office experience.
Option 3: A combination of two years of college education and/or relevant experience.
Option 4: A two-year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal studies or related field of study.
