Lab Technician ITS

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• The Cyber Lab Technician will support the operation, maintenance, and security of the Cybersecurity & Information Systems Department cybersecurity laboratories/classrooms (Rooms 217 & 240).
• The role involves configuring and maintaining lab equipment and environments, providing weekly in person lab hours; providing students technical support and tutoring for hands-on lab assignments via email, Teams, in-person; and assisting faculty with projects.
• The Cyber Lab Tech will also help maintain cybersecurity tools, simulate attack/defense scenarios, and maintain documentation.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lab Setup & Maintenance.
• Configure and maintain physical and virtual lab environments (e.g., VMware, VirtualBox, cloud-based labs).
• Install, update, and patch operating systems (Windows, Linux, macOS) and cybersecurity tools.
• Ensure lab systems and network devices are functional before scheduled classes or workshops.
• Maintain an inventory of lab hardware, software licenses, and network configurations.
• Keep tools and equipment secured at all times.
• Keep classrooms/labs neat and in order.
• Technical Support & Troubleshooting.
• Manage in person lab hours Tues & Thurs; some hours during class.
• Provide first-level tech support and tutoring to students via in person, email, and MS Teams meetings as needed.
• Assist students in setting up virtual machines, configuring network devices, and using cybersecurity software.
• Troubleshoot connectivity, configuration, and system errors in real-time during lab sessions.
• Assist C&IS Faculty with Projects • Maintain the Cybersecurity Club Website.
• Maintain the 2 electronic Bulletin Boards that run on the Center for Cybersecurity and Intelligence Studies’ hallway Tvs.
• Provide support for Cybersecurity Competitions.
• Assist in the documentation for CAE Redesignation.
• Assist faculty in developing and refining lab assignments.
• Provide support for grant related activities.
• Conduct research, enter HelpDesk tickets and follow-up when requested.
• Attend and participate in special events and presentations.
• Keep weekly documentation of hours worked, activities time was spent on, and updates in UDM payroll system in a timely manner.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Cybersecurity, Cybersecurity Management, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Intermediate knowledge of networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, firewalls, VLANs, etc.).
• Familiarity with operating systems (Windows, Linux, Windows Server, MacOS) and virtualization platforms.
• Understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals (threats, vulnerabilities, risk mitigation).

Preferred Qualifications (if any) :

• Experience with cybersecurity tools (e.g., Wireshark, Nmap, Metasploit, Snort, Splunk).
• Knowledge of scripting languages (Python, Bash, PowerShell) for automation.
• Prior participation in cybersecurity competitions (e.g., NCAE Cybergames, ISACA Cybersecurity Case Competition, CTFs, NCL, CyberPatriot).
