This position is in the IT / System Shared Services Unit, at SCDMV Headquarters in Blythewood, SC.
Responsibilities of the Network Technician II
• With supervision: responsible to configure, deploy, install, monitor, troubleshoot and maintain the agency's switching and routing infrastructure devices and software. Reviews switch, router and other device logs in order to ensure industry best practices and standards are maintained throughout the data network.
• Using logs and management tools, identifies, and reports to management any troubles, unusual traffic patterns, software misconfigurations, unsafe security practices, and/or suspected abuse or misuse of computer or network resources and maintain record of said logs.
• Under limited supervision monitor network resources to ensure detected problems are quickly corrected. Use system software to determine network status. Configure and upgrade network management software on Network Operation Center servers.
• Coordinates with third party service providers for orders of new service, trouble reporting and resolution of troubles and outages to include data/voice/power.
• Supports other SCDMV IT resources with end-user network troubles and requests for service. Fills Moves/Add/Change requests, performs trouble resolution, and with supervision carries out business-related engineering tasks.
• Assists with WLAN configurations, remote connectivity user configurations, VPN user setup and trouble resolution. Coordinates these efforts with third party service providers as necessary.
• A point of contact for all cell phone and agency-issued handheld device activation/service changes/deactivations. Responsible for troubleshooting all reported troubles on these devices. Coordinates with third party service providers as necessary.
• Assist in the design, implementation, and management of Agency LAN/WAN/WLAN network construction.
• Maintains accurate, detailed documentation of network architecture; network device configurations; and trouble incidents and resolutions.
• Assist in the support of the Agency telephony, to include moves/adds/changes, trouble reporting and resolution.
• Other duties as required.
Examples of duties
Minimum Requirements
• A high school diploma and experience in information technology, electronics technology systems, or other related areas. An associate degree or bachelor's degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience.
• Must possess excellent written and verbal skills.
Additional Requirements
• Working knowledge of Windows networking, including domain administration, security, communication protocols and LAN/WAN devices. Knowledge/Ability to install, configure, manage, monitor, troubleshoot/repair network devices (switches, routers, CSU/DSU's).
• Knowledge/Ability to use software (packet sniffers, vendor-specific tools), SNMP and other performance monitoring tools to monitor, manage, detect trouble and maintain the security/integrity of the DMV data network.
• Knowledge/Ability to coordinate with service providers in resolution of trouble issues.
• Ability to interpret/apply rules/regulations.
• Effective communication skills.
• Works under the general guidance of the Network Operations Center Manager. Employee has general discretion to use own good judgement in accordance with industry Best Practices and Agency procedures.
• Position involves access to information containing citizens' driver/vehicle records and other computerized data. May require overnight travel.
• Employee must be able to lift 50 lbs., use a ladder and basic hand tools. Must possess a valid driver's license.
• Must reside within a 40-mile radius of DMV HQ's.
• Will be required to keep state-provided cell phone on and near the person at all times.
• As a member of the information security incident response team (ISIRT), utilizes available network and software tools, DMV policies, processes and procedures to detect, identify, troubleshoot, isolate, and correct data/equipment/network related security issues.
• Assists other ISIRT team members and responds to emails.
• ISIRT team members will ensure the CIO and ISO are informed of all actions performed or needed.
• Documents incident on the tracking log.
Qualifications
Agency Preferred
• Two (2) years of experience in network installation, IT technical support, or a related field.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.
• CCNA certification or equivalent.
