The Systems Administrator II is responsible for the effective provisioning, installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware, software, and related infrastructure. This individual participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure and ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational policies.

This role is responsible for the technical design, planning, implementation, performance tuning, and recovery procedures for mission-critical enterprise systems. The Systems Administrator II serves as a technical expert in the area of system administration for complex operating systems, recommends system and application improvements, investigates system requirements, develops specifications, and provides project leadership to maintain a high level of service.

The majority of systems administration responsibilities are focused on Linux servers. This role also supports storage array and storage network administration, as well as Kubernetes administration within an OpenShift environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day operations of enterprise host computer systems, including performance monitoring, configuration, maintenance, and repair.
  • Maintain records of system downtime and equipment inventory.
  • Apply firmware and software revisions to host systems and work with vendors to support operational activities.
  • Develop system and application implementation plans, custom scripts, and testing procedures to ensure operational reliability.
  • Train technical staff on newly developed or acquired software and hardware solutions.
  • Apply operating system patches and upgrades on a regular basis.
  • Ensure high availability and acceptable performance levels of mission-critical systems.
  • Apply system-level firmware upgrades as required.
  • Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization.
  • Install, configure, and upgrade systems management, monitoring, and administrative tools.
  • Configure and implement new services as needed.
  • Monitor hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes while reviewing application and system logs.
  • Manage backup operations to ensure critical systems and data are properly protected and recoverable.
  • Develop procedures to maintain security and protect systems from unauthorized access, misuse, and environmental threats.
  • Conduct security monitoring and address concerns in accordance with established security policies and best practices.
  • Research, recommend, and implement infrastructure improvements including operating system upgrades, firmware updates, security enhancements, networking improvements, and related technologies.
  • Troubleshoot and recover from hardware and software failures while coordinating with impacted stakeholders.
  • Engineer infrastructure solutions to support operational and project needs.
  • Support disaster recovery, business continuity planning, and testing.
  • Develop and maintain operational, configuration, and procedural documentation.
  • Provide Tier III support and assist with troubleshooting complex technical issues.
  • Communicate technical information effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Deliver excellent customer service to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Adhere to company policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Participate in after-hours support activities, including evenings and weekends as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field preferred.
  • Microsoft, Linux, or Unix certifications preferred.
  • 5+ years of related systems administration experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of Windows, Linux, Unix, and VMware environments.
  • Experience with VMware, Unix/Linux, and Microsoft systems administration.
  • Understanding of virtualization concepts, tools, clustering, and configuration.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Exchange preferred.
  • Experience with cloud technologies such as Azure and Microsoft 365.
  • Understanding of computer security principles and best practices.
  • Understanding of networking concepts and infrastructure.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across hardware, software, operating systems, and networking.
  • Ability to research solutions, develop implementation plans, and see projects through completion.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working in virtualized Microsoft and Linux/Unix environments.
  • Red Hat OpenShift and Kubernetes administration experience.
  • Storage Area Network (SAN) administration experience.
  • NAS administration experience (TrueNAS preferred).

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tallahassee, FL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $35.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
