Applicants will be required to participate in an interview and physical fitness test. Interview and testing applicant's presence in St George on the date of testing.

Please Note: Applicants who are hired under this job offering will be hired as Part Time employees and will be paid for the hours spent attending the Police Academy. They will be provided full-time employment as a Police Officer I, with the St. George Police Department, upon their successful completion of POST.

Applicants will be required to sign a two-year employment contract prior to being hired under this job offering.

Position Summary
Trainees will be paid an hourly part time wage while attending a Utah Post Academy Police Officer Standards and Training program which includes attending classroom lectures, completing written testing and practical assessments, physical fitness testing, and scenario based training for the purpose of obtaining their Utah Police Officer Certification.

Upon completion of POST, and when promoted to Full Time Police Officer I status, performs a variety of highly trained law enforcement procedures for the City of St. George to protect and maintain the wellbeing of the general population of the City.

Examples of duties

1. Attend and successfully complete the Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training curriculum to obtain a Utah Police Officer Certification.
2. Effects an arrest within training guidelines and department policy using that amount of force which is reasonable and necessary in accordance with policy and law.
3. Prepares investigative and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations.
4. Exercises independent judgment in determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when probable cause exists to search and arrest, and when force may be used and to what degree.
5. Operates a law enforcement vehicle during both the day and night in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits, in congested traffic, and in unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, smoke, high winds, rain, ice, and snow.
6. Communicates effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.
7. Gathers information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining the statements of victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informers.
8. Pursues fleeing suspects and performs rescue operations which may involve quickly entering and exiting a law enforcement patrol vehicle; lifting, carrying, and dragging heavy objects; climbing over and pulling oneself up over obstacles; jumping down from elevated surfaces; climbing through openings; jumping over obstacles, ditches, and streams; crawling in confined areas; balancing on uneven or narrow surfaces; and using body force to gain entrance through barriers.
9. Loads, unloads, aims, and fires, from a variety of body positions, a handgun, shotgun, and other agency firearms under conditions of stress that justify the use of deadly force and at levels of proficiency prescribed per certification standards.
10. Performs searches of people, vehicles, buildings, and large outdoor areas which may involve feeling and detecting objects, walking for long periods of time, detaining people, and stopping suspicious vehicles and persons.
11. Conducts visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time.
12. Engages in law enforcement patrol functions, including such things as working rotating shifts, walking on foot patrol, and physically checking the doors and windows of buildings to ensure they are secure.
13. Effectively communicates with people, including juveniles, by giving information and directions, mediating disputes, and advising of rights and processes.
14. Demonstrates communication skills in court and other formal settings.
15. Detects and collects evidence and substances that provide the basis of criminal offenses and infractions and that indicate the presence of dangerous conditions.
16. Endures verbal and mental abuse when confronted with hostile views and opinions of suspects and other people encountered in an antagonistic environment.
17. Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters, including directing traffic for long periods of time; administering emergency medical aid; lifting, dragging, and carrying people away from dangerous situations; and securing and evacuating people from particular areas.
18. Processes and transports prisoners and committed mental patients using handcuffs and other appropriate restraints.
19. Puts on and operates a gas mask in situations where chemical munitions are being deployed.
20. Extinguishes small fires by using extinguisher and other appropriate means.
21. Reads and comprehends legal and non-legal documents, including the preparation and processing of such documents as citations, affidavits, and warrants.
22. Serves as an agent of the court in serving warrants, subpoenas, summonses, etc.
23. Processes arrested suspects, including taking their photographs and obtaining a legible set of inked fingerprint impressions.
24. Performs duties that actively prevent or detect crime and enforce criminal statutes or ordinances of the State of Utah or any of its political subdivisions.
25. Responds to situations involving threats to public safety and making emergency decisions affecting the lives and health of others.
26. Performs duties that consist of providing community protection.
27. Perform other related tasks as required.

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions
Moderately heavy physical activity. Required to push, pull, or lift heavy weights. Difficult working positions, including standing, walking, or sitting uncomfortably for extended periods. Exposure to elements such as heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dust, or grease. The employee’s life or personal safety is placed at risk, and that risk may be extreme when working some special assignments. Intermittent exposure to infectious disease, disturbed individuals, emotionally unbalanced individuals, etc. Exposure to stressful situations is of considerable magnitude as a result of human behavior. May be required to work without sleep for extended periods during prolonged emergency situations. Subjected to traffic hazards during emergency responses through heavy traffic.

Qualifications

1. Must be a United States Citizen.
2. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment.
3. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
4. Must have no felony or domestic violence convictions.
5. Must pass and maintain department physical fitness standards.
6. Prior to hiring, must successfully complete the National Police Officer Selection Examination or requirements established by the City and the City’s Police Department. This may include written and oral examination, physical examination, background investigations, computer voice stress and/or polygraph examination, drug test, psychological evaluation, and physical fitness test.
7. Must be UTAH POST certified as a LEO (law enforcement officer) within 12 months of hire.
8. Must possess a valid driver’s license. A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.
9. Consideration will be given for Law Enforcement Officer experience, military service, Police Officer certification, and any completed college degree.

Supplemental information

Knowledge:

• Some knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.

• Working knowledge of criminal, traffic, and juvenile codes for the State of Utah.

• Working knowledge of the Utah judicial system and civil procedures, testifying, and courtroom demeanor.
