The purpose of this position is to teach a technical, welding, trade to prisoners, administer appropriate tests and provide counseling to help prisoners-students complete the program. Eighty percent of work week is spent in direct supervision of prisoners within the perimeters of a Secure Level II Correctional Facility. The Welding Trades Class includes instruction in Oxy-Acetylene Safety, Oxy-Fuel Gas Welding, Brazing and Braze Welding, Oxy-Fuel Gas Cutting, Arc Welding Safety, Shield Metal Arc Welding, Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG), Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG) and Flux-core Arc Welding (FCAW).

Education

Possession of an associate's degree in an area of the specific trade or occupation to be taught.

Experience

No specific type or amount is required.

Qualifications

Possession of an appropriate bachelor's degree, master's degree, or vocational teacher certification may be substituted for the education and experience requirements.

OR

Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school and four years of recent experience in the practice of the specific trade or occupation to be taught, including six months of experience training others in the trade or occupation may be substituted for the education and experience requirements.

Specifically: Four years of experience in the skilled craft of welding pertaining to the many processes of fusion, adhesion, and cutting to fabricate or repair products used in manufacturing, research and application.

The Department of Corrections may screen out job applicants who have been convicted of a felony in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017*. *Applicants who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment with the Department of Corrections until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.
