Job Description

As a Senior Engineer - Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), you will play a key role in the delivery of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) projects supporting AECOM's Global Transport and Infrastructure business. Working within a global delivery model, you will contribute to the design, integration, documentation and coordination of ITS solutions across major road, tunnel, motorway, rail and smart infrastructure projects.

You will work closely with regional project teams, clients and multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop practical, reliable and innovative solutions that meet operational, safety and performance requirements. The role requires a strong balance of technical capability, stakeholder engagement and collaborative problem-solving, with a particular focus on working effectively across geographical, cultural and organisational boundaries.

Here is what you will do:

  • Contribute to the design, specification and integration of ITS systems across transportation and infrastructure projects.
  • Prepare and review engineering documentation including technical reports, specifications, design criteria, datasheets, drawings, calculations and scope documents.
  • Support the design and implementation of systems such as CCTV, VMS, communications networks, fibre optic infrastructure, incident detection systems, and associated control systems.
  • Coordinate interfaces between ITS, electrical, communications, civil, structural and operational disciplines.
  • Collaborate closely with regional project teams to ensure technical deliverables align with client expectations, project objectives and applicable standards.
  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, systems integration activities and multidisciplinary coordination workshops.
  • Support testing, commissioning and operational readiness activities where required.
  • Assist in the development of project estimates, work plans, schedules and resource planning activities.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, digital engineering initiatives and the development of technical standards and best practices.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support capability development across Enterprise Capabilities.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Able to work independently on complex technical tasks while seeking clarification where the design basis is incomplete.
  • Accurate and disciplined, with a strong record of self-checking and document control.
  • Clear communicator who can collaborate confidently across countries, cultures and disciplines.
  • Organised and able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines without losing control of quality.
  • Proactive and solutions-focused, with the confidence to raise technical concerns and risks early.
  • Collaborative and willing to mentor colleagues, share knowledge and support team delivery.
  • A systems thinker, able to hold the whole ITS solution in view while working on one part of it.
  • Comfortable resolving interfaces where the boundary between ITS, electrical, communications and civil scope is not cleanly defined.
  • Able to turn operational and safety requirements into practical, verifiable technical specifications.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Electronics, Telecommunications, Mechatronics or related discipline).
  • At least 8 years' experience delivering ITS, transport technology, communications or infrastructure projects.
  • Registered Professional Engineer with a recognised professional body.
  • Demonstrated experience working on major road, motorway, tunnel, rail or smart infrastructure projects.
  • Experience supporting multidisciplinary project teams throughout design, construction and commissioning phases.
  • Proven experience coordinating technical interfaces across clients, contractors, operators and engineering disciplines.
  • Experience in one or more of the following ITS systems: traffic management systems; roadside equipment including CCTV, variable message signs, lane use signs, variable speed limit signs, vehicle detectors, weigh-in-motion systems, vehicle classifiers and field cabinets; communications and fibre optic networks; incident detection systems; connected and smart mobility infrastructure; street lighting and electrical infrastructure; and LV distribution for ITS equipment.
  • Proficiency in preparing engineering documentation including specifications, technical reports, requirements documentation, verification plans and scopes of work.
  • Experience working directly with clients, operators, contractors and asset owners throughout project delivery.
  • Experience supporting testing, commissioning, systems integration and operational acceptance activities.
  • Experience with Australian Standards, road authority standards and ITS frameworks, or equivalent international standards experience with demonstrated adaptability.
  • Professional fluency in written and spoken English and confidence collaborating with international stakeholders.
  • Experience using engineering and project delivery platforms such as Aconex, GIS, Revizto, MS Project or equivalent digital delivery tools is advantageous.
  • Experience working within global delivery centres, distributed teams or international project environments is advantageous.
