Position Description

Kibali Gold Mine seeks to recruit a Project Power & Electrical Engineer for the ARK Project (Feasibility Study).TheProject Power & Electrical Engineer will be responsible to lead power generation and electrical infrastructure design for the expansion, primarily focused on generation, transmission and distribution.

You will be expected to align to the Barrick DNA and to operate within our mining assets with our best people teams. You will contribute in a safe and cost-effective manner to achieve targets in accordance with Mine Safety Standards, Policies and Procedures and ensure daily targets are met.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance and technical support on power generation and electrical infrastructure for the pre-feasibility studies, feasibility study, basic engineering and other related phases of the project.
  • Prepare engineering analyses, specifications, capital and operating cost estimates of key equipment and contract works for the project.
  • Review and give input into power generation and electrical infrastructure engineering designs and monitor and ensure effective design, project controls, and quality.
  • Perform and drive the required studies and early works execution for power generation and electrical infrastructure design by creating associated design criteria and guiding engineering contractors aligned with overall project timelines and schedules.
  • Estimate CAPEX by identifying major equipment, including long lead items along with their purchasing cost.
  • Prepare major equipment specifications, datasheets, requisitions, and bid evaluations.
  • Perform engineering calculations to support design decisions.
  • Prepare and negotiate contracts.
  • Plan and manage budgets.
  • Give inputs into overall project schedule and ensure that critical path items related to power generation and electrical infrastructure are accounted for to enable project execution.
  • Develop and implement quality control programs.
  • Provide direction on power generation and electrical infrastructure scope and requirements to the suppliers based on specifications included in the procurement agreement.
  • Provide direction and support on other electrical infrastructure related to the project and the associated electrical equipment, from 132 kV down to 400 V.
  • Ensure that manpower, equipment, tools, materials, and design necessary to support the project schedule will be available.
  • Perform electrical integrity assessments of critical generating, transmission and distribution equipment currently installed on site.
  • Evaluate the power generation and electrical Capital and OPEX cost for budgeting and benchmarking purposes.
  • Perform load flow calculations of the electrical network and ensure that the infrastructure can meet the power requirement inclusive of associated demand planning.
  • Maintain an up-to-date database of critical spares and verify availability of common spares.
  • Perform electrical design verification in accordance with relevant international codes and standards.
  • Review business cases for application for expenditure of capital.
  • Stay abreast of developments in technology and find application of this technology on the operation to reduce cost, increase uptime, and improve safety.

Qualification requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Registered Professional Engineer.

Experience and competencies needed

  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience in Electrical Engineering.

  • Experience in the mining and/or power industry, with a focus on various phases of project execution from conceptual through to execution.

  • Computer Skills – must have strong computer skills and proficient in Microsoft Office software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Projects, and Outlook).

  • Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and collaborate with cross-functional teams.

  • Knowledgeable and experienced with electrical equipment including:

    • Transmission lines up to 132 kV
    • HV/MV switchgear (outdoor from 66 kV up to 132 kV, indoor from 33 kV down to 6.6 kV)
    • Processing plant equipment (pumps, mill motors, LRS systems, etc.)
    • Hydro power generation, including turbines, generators and power evacuation equipment).
    • Diesel generators for prime power supply.
    • Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
    • Solar PV power plants
    • Power and distribution transformers
    • Relays and protection systems
    • Motor starters and motor control centres
  • Experienced with power system studies in software like ETAP and Powerfactory, will be an advantage.

  • Experience in hydro power, solar PV, thermal and BESS, will be an advantage.

  • Experience in the mining industry (processing plant and/or mining), will be an advantage.
