Research Assistant Optometry

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• The Optometry Student Research Assistant will support faculty-led research projects within the School of Optometry.
• Responsibilities may include participant recruitment and scheduling, informed-consent support as permitted by the research protocol, data collection, operation of research instrumentation following training, data entry and organization, literature searches, preparation of study materials, and assistance with research presentations, abstracts, and manuscripts.
• The position is designed to provide optometry students with mentored experience in the research process while contributing to ongoing research within the School of Optometry.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Current enrollment and good academic standing in the Doctor of Optometry (OD) program at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Optometry or in an undergraduate program with the goal of working in any health-related profession.
• Interest in vision science, optometry, clinical research, or related areas.
• Ability to follow research protocols and instructions accurately.

Preferred Qualifications (if any):

• Prior research, laboratory, clinical, or data-management experience is preferred but not required.
• Interest in visual optics, contact lenses, myopia management, ocular disease, or other areas of optometric research.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, data collection, literature searches, or basic statistical analysis is desirable.

• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a research team.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to maintain accurate research records and protect confidential information.
• Ability to learn and follow research protocols, operate research equipment after appropriate training, and assist with data collection, data entry, literature review, and preparation of research materials.
• Dependability and ability to meet established deadlines and scheduled research sessions.

Physical Requirements (if any):

• Ability to perform typical laboratory and clinical research activities, including prolonged periods of sitting or standing, computer use, data entry, and operation of standard optometric and research equipment.
• Ability to occasionally move or position research materials and equipment of approximately 20 pounds.
• Reasonable accommodations will be provided as required.

Licenses/Certifications (if any):

• No professional license required.
• Completion of required institutional research training, including CITI/IRB or human-subjects research training, may be required before participating in applicable research activities.

Anticipated Schedule:

• Less than 20 hours a week, when their academic responsibilities allow.
